Switching Accountants: Easier Than You Think

Switching accountants is more common than you may realise

If you've ever thought about changing accountants, you're probably picturing weeks of paperwork, awkward conversations, and the risk of something falling through the cracks. The good news? It's a well-established process, and in most cases it happens smoothly in the background, without you having to lift much more than a pen.

Why people put it off

Many business owners stay with an accountant simply because switching feels like a hassle, even when they're not getting the service, advice, or responsiveness they deserve. But loyalty shouldn't cost you missed opportunities or sleepless nights over whether your compliance is being handled properly.

How the switch actually works

  1. You choose your new accountant. For this example, you’ve chosen Goddard (great choice!) Once you've decided to work with me, we sign a letter of engagement setting out exactly what I'll do for you.

  2. I contact your current accountant. This is called requesting "professional clearance" and is a standard, routine letter confirming there's no reason I shouldn't take you on. This requests your accounts, tax records, and other relevant information. It's a professional courtesy between accountants, not a request for permission to leave.

  3. Records are transferred. Your previous accountant sends over your accounts, tax returns, and other data. If you use cloud accounting software, this is often as simple as switching access.

  4. HMRC authorisation is set up. I'll submit the paperwork to be authorised to act on your behalf for tax, so there's no gap in who's looking after your filings.

  5. We confirm deadlines together. Before anything moves, we'll agree exactly who's handling any upcoming filings, so nothing is missed during the handover.

Most of this happens between the accountants directly, meaning very little admin lands on your desk. Your new accountant should guide you through the process and deal with much of the administration directly.

A few common questions

Will I lose any data? No, your existing accountant should provide the relevant records and information required for the new accountant to take over your affairs.

Can I switch mid-year? Yes. There's no need to wait for year-end or a "natural" break point, switching can happen whenever suits you.

What if I'm mid-way through a VAT quarter or approaching a deadline? That's fine too, we'll simply make sure responsibilities are clear so nothing is missed in the handover.

Why it's worth it

As a sole practitioner, I built Goddard Accounting around the idea that you should always know exactly who you're speaking to, not be passed between departments or juniors. If you've been feeling like a number rather than a client, switching could be one of the simplest, most worthwhile changes you make this year.

If you're considering a move, get in touch and I'll take care of the rest.
